A Perfect Day in LA: Francesca’s Guide to the Best of the City
Los Angeles is a city of endless charm, where European sensibilities meet California cool—a fusion that’s also at the heart of Ciao Pappy. California is more than just home; it’s an inspiration—its abundance of fresh, seasonal ingredients, laid-back energy, and rich culinary diversity shape everything I create. From the farmers markets to the coastal influence, it embodies the essence of Italifornia, the spirit behind my sauces.
For me, the perfect day is a blend of great food, vibrant culture, and little moments that make LA feel like home. Building a startup takes up most of my time, so when I get the chance to step away and enjoy my favorite places, it’s always a treat. I’ve lived in LA for 15 years, so I have my staple go-to spots, but I’m always excited to explore something new. The city has become a culinary leader, with an ever-evolving restaurant scene, festivals, and activities that make it impossible to ever feel like you’ve “seen it all.”
Morning: Coffee, Pastries & a Productive Start
Sightglass, my go-to spot for coffee and catching up on work. It’s the perfect place to get out of my home office, take meetings, and soak in the energy of the city while sipping a beautifully crafted cappuccino.
For breakfast, République is simply unmatched. The pastries here are on another level—flaky, buttery perfection that transports me straight to Paris. Whether I’m indulging in a croissant or a hearty tartine, this morning ritual is an essential start to the day.
Midday: Lunch, Markets & Seasonal Inspiration
When lunchtime rolls around, I’m either at Joan’s on Third or Monsieur Marcel at the Original Farmers Market—both of which happen to carry our sauce! Joan’s is always reliable for a fresh, delicious meal (I almost always order their Chinese Chicken Salad). I love stopping by these spots not only to grab a bite but also to say hello and pick up some of my favorite curated gourmet goodies.
Sundays are reserved for a trip to the Larchmont Village Farmers Market, where I stock up on fresh, seasonal produce. I always find inspiration here—the best dishes start with incredible ingredients, and shopping the market helps me stay connected to the season. It’s my favorite way to spark creativity in the kitchen.
Afternoon: Nature, Shopping & Inspiration
Afternoons are for movement and exploration. If I’m craving the outdoors, I’ll head to Fryman Canyon for a hike—it’s one of the best spots for a quick nature escape, with sweeping city views and fewer crowds than some of the other popular trails.
On other days, I’ll take a leisurely stroll down Melrose Place or Abbot Kinney, two of the best neighborhoods for window shopping. I love discovering unique boutiques, design stores, and new café openings. There’s always something fresh to explore in LA’s ever-evolving fashion and food scene.
If I’m in the mood for culture, LACMA and the Academy of Motion Pictures Museum are just a walk away from home. I feel so lucky to have these incredible museums at my fingertips, whether I’m exploring new exhibits or simply walking through the surrounding parks with my dog and husband. The Broad downtown is another favorite, with incredible contemporary art that always sparks creativity.
Sunset Aperitivo: A Taste of Europe in LA
As the day winds down, Bar Siesta is my little European escape in Silverlake. Founded by Heather Speer of Botanica and Lucia Flores of Siesta Co., it’s a match made in heaven. They have an incredible wine list and the most delicious tapas. Perfect for date night or a catch up with a friend. The vibe is very unique and special.
Dinner: LA’s Best Tables
For dinner, my favorites are a mix of neighborhood gems and iconic destinations. Horses is a classic, with a lively atmosphere and perfect bistro-style dishes. Chi Spacca is where I go when I want to indulge in something truly decadent Tuscan-inspired menu or grab a seat at their bar for the best burger in town. Oste brings a cozy, modern Italian fee lwhich often reminds my husband and I of our days in NYC, while Pace is my choice for a relaxed, rustic meal with deep LA-staple roots. And when I’m craving something different, Chao Krung is my go-to for incredible, authentic Thai food—it’s been a neighborhood staple for decades for a reason.
Late Night: Music & Cocktails
If the night calls for cocktails, The Roger Room is my pick for its intimate, speakeasy charm. But when I want live music, I’ll head to The Dresden, where the jazz and old-school ambiance feel timeless, or Desert 5 Spot, where the energy is high and the music is always fun, country-music vibe.
Weekend Escape: The Beach
Whenever I need a change of scenery, Manhattan Beach is my go-to. It has the best of everything—beautiful sand, a great boardwalk, and a relaxed neighborhood vibe that makes it the perfect LA escape without leaving the city.
This is the Los Angeles I love—a city that blends good food, creativity, nature, and a little European flair. It’s more than just a place to live; it’s a city with spirit, heart, and passion, where every street, market, and restaurant tells a story. Whether it’s the warmth of a familiar café, the inspiration found in a museum exhibit, or the energy of a new restaurant, LA never stops evolving.
