Fall Harvest along the Appalachian Trail and Sierra Mountains: 22 Fruit & Veg | Nov 2024
I remember when we started in 2010....
We’re ready to explore in season produce at the farmers market — so our friend Ally Miller put together a guide of seasonal produce and recipe combinations in the form of beautiful poster sized designs. We’ll also do a feature for each month of the year.
Trout, Shiitake mushrooms, scallions and mushrooms are in season — time for soy sauce & ginger stir fry. Seasonal leafy greens and micro greens like sorrel and sprouts will also add elements of summer & citrus elements, respectively. Think: tastes like lemon.
Bok choy, spaghetti squash, leek, and radicchio is in season, and will keep your Vitamin D levels up as the sun UV rays drop to 1-4. Try adding some squash to your diet — you can peel it with a peeler to make plant based al dente “pasta”, or cube it / slice it and stir fry with some olive oil and butter to caramelize the fruit.
Fall fruits are in abundance — look for unique varietals, throw them in a brown paper bag and let them ripen to soft to a touch firmness. You can slice them on cheeseboards or have them as breakfast and snacks — it’ll add diversity of nutrients & vitamins to your diet. Try picking up some Grain Free Crackers or Sourdough Crackers or string beans to add some texture and fiber to your diet in the fall. Great additions to your board or quickly blanched for 1 minute in boiling water. Add some unique sauces like miso or dashi or tahini / chili crisp to get creative each day.
For folks who are into the Thanksgiving season, don’t wait for the big day and start experimenting with baked potatoes and mashed. We like to look for scallions, local sour cream, onions, garlics, and other allium varietals to sauté and add on top. Try some strange pumpkin varietals, roast them or sauté them like squash, or boil and turn into soup or puree porridges w/ maple syrup and honey. All of these have summer nutrients condensed in the form of fall fruit, so take advantage of all those vitamins this fall!
Hope you enjoy!
